Environmental Artist Spotlight:
An Interview with JULIA SCHLOSS
Julia Schloss is a Dallas, Texas based artist who takes trash seriously. She is a fine teacher and creative mind and was nice enough to tell Everyday Revolution some things about herself…You never know, one day she may be out at *your* curb, digging through your own hidden jewels!
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Julia Schloss. I was born in Northern California in 1962. My Parents moved to Dallas when I was five. I enjoyed a fairly normal childhood. Daddy worked for the post office and ministered to ourcommunity through our church in Old East Dallas. Mama stayed home and made it warm and sweet. She also worked in the church, helping outwhere she could. We were essentially a missionary family going back several generations. We'd been members of that church since coming to Dallas, then it burned down on Christmas Even of '76. I was fourteen. A homeless person fell asleep smoking in one of the exterior porchalcoves. The building was over one hundred years old. It was brittleand dry and perfect tinder for a raging fire. I remember the call coming to our home, stealing us away from our traditional Christmas morning and rushing to the church in the dark with my family. Finding our friends already there rescuing antique maple pews and ornate mahogany ministers chairs, the brand new music stands we had saved andwashed cars for all summer. We pulled from the hot ashes charred hymnals, old bibles, anything we could from the wreckage. The fire marshall chased us out for our own safety. Then we watched as they turned the giant hoses on it and washed away all hope of any further rescue. It was horrible and marked me for Life. I suddenly had feelings for the pieces and parts that made up my experience in thechurch. All the fancy scrolled furnishings and the stained glass windows depicting the Life of Christ. Those windows had kept me awake during many a service. I still have pieces of glass from those windows. I instantly evolved emotionally from a carefree toddler to a seeking tween-ager. I saw the world around me from a new perspective. What can be saved, and how can I save it? The Homeless Person's issue has always been personal to me. At first I resented that smoking man, but then I considered his circumstance and realized, if my church had been doing all it could for the surrounding community that man never would have had to hide in the porch for rest on a cold Dallas Christmas Eve. Resolution slowly became Resurrection Art.
What kind of things do you like?
Courage. Balance. Fairness. Dignity. Hard work. Hard Workers. Finishing things. Thrilled clients. Happy creatures. BirdSong. Good Chocolate. Jeans that fit. Turquoise, Black pearls and white gold. Harmony. Hagen Daz. Full Moons. Elegance. Sunsets. Georgia Peaches and Texas Grapefruits. Clouds. Turtles. The smell of freshly mown fields, and the same fields filled to brimming with bluebonnets. The amazing things that Dallas casts off during Bulky Trash Week. Resurrecting those things to gift or sell. Singing with my grand kids. Making art with my friends. There is nothing like being in a room full of artists at their process. The energy in that room cannot be replicated by any other experience. The vibe is palpable. It has it's own scent. Oil paint, new paper, crayon, mineral spirits, pencil shavings, clay, glues, and the steam of production. Some folks like the smell of baking bread. I live for the smell of an art factory.
How did you come to be where you are today?
Raised up by a very frugal family, survivors of the Great Depression, I learned from the beginning that every single thing has multiple uses. It is a natural function to me and mine that everything be used til itdisintegrates. Then use the pieces left over to create something new and useful. We are pragmatic Scots Jews. This combined heritage, my astrological location at birth, being Libran, and the hard scrabble life experiences of my tent revival missionary family molded me into a person who sees the need and fills it as beautifully and reasonably as possible. From as early as I can remember I've been creating new things from old things and gifting them. My Dad and I would have yard sales on the weekends to sell off the lion share of the things he dragged home. In the late 70's consignment stores began to pop up and they became asource of processing for us. I was married very young, produced three incredible human beings, then divorced soon after. I was suddenly on my own with a lot of responsibility and debt. My parents and extended family were as supportive as they could be, but there wasn't much to go around so I made do. Working as many hours a day as I could cleaning and organizing homes and offices. From these jobs I was given the things that were to be tossed out and asked to please take care of it. Some of it I donated, some of it was gifted, or sold in yard sales. I've been doing this thing that is suddenly chic all my life. I bet alot of folks have.
What turned you on to recycled art?
My Father and his Mother. They were both very creative in the ways they recycled. My Dad was a fun guy, a great companion for a creative kid. My Gramma was The Teacher. She instructed me in the ways of a Good Kitchen. Where the garden is bountiful and just outside the door. The back yard was the family garden. The whole family benefited from this garden and the whole family worked it. Chickens roamed around in it, and rabbits. It filled the entire yard. There was enough for humans and creatures. But then we consumed those chickens and rabbits upon occasion too. Every inch was in use except for the spot beneath the red oak tree where the glider sat and we would watch the garden grow. It was alive with bumble bees, honey bees, butterflies dragon flies, little green anoles and horny toads. That yard vibrated with life and color all year long. Her tomatoes were beyond match. I still grow tomatoes from the seeds I collected the day of her memorial at the house. She taught me how to make paper in the hot Dallas sun in July and August for painting and drawing on or making masks all Winter. She taught me how to make Christmas ornaments from home made clay, how to compost, and sew. She taught me how to unravel a sweater that's beensoiled beyond repair or simply grown out of and re use the yarn for another project. She showed me how to make gloves and moccasins with soft leather from an old coat, how to make patterns from news paper, and more. She just thought that way. It wasn't second nature. It wAs her nature. My Dad was the scandal of the family. He worked for the Post Office delivering mail and would go through the trash cans on his route and bring home amazing things. Like a silly school boy he once gleefully brought home a box full of Kangaroo Rats that got loose at the Post office, we fixed ‘em up in an enclosure we made from plastic waterjugs and made toys and hiding places with an old shoe and some pieces and parts from an old bird cage. He brought home old tools that had been tossed. Then he would clean and repair them, use them or give them to someone who needed them. He taught me to use power tools and not be afraid I might ruin something by trying to work with it. He taught me that Life is Short and the only true sin is in not Loving what you do with every minute of it. God put us here to glorify him and we can't do that when we are angry every day at work. From my Father came the organizational skills. He was NOT organized and brought home a lot of stuff. In order to keep the peace in our home, it became my chosen job to keep these things orderly. I loved him so much, I didn't want him to be in trouble with my Mom who worked very hard keeping our home nice. I learned very early what could REALLY be salvaged and what was REALLY trash. My Dad never did. He saw potential in everything. He was the essence of Hope. His last breath was a prayer for someone else who needed that Hope. He was a hero. I was crazy blessed by his parentage.
Tell us about what inspires your art and your creative process.
I am inspired in a very narrow way, I hate to admit it. But the practical side of me insists that things be used in their original intent if atall possible. If I find a wooden spoon in good shape, it gets put inthe dishwasher and used as a wooden spoon. Some folks see the spoon in a totally different way, mUch more artfully than I do. I have to reach to see the art in my foundlings. I have to have tried every possible angle to use it the way it was meant to be used. If nothing works, it goes into a bin and waits for its use to become obvious to me.
When I see styrofoam on the curb, I see poison laying on the side of theroad leeching into our air and water table. It makes me fume. I began bringing home styrofoam years ago and crushing it to create texture inmy paintings, then I learned to make sculptures with it, then I began creating wall hangings with it. It eventually became an excellentresource for my art.
I now teach Styrofoam Art workshops so others can learn just how versatile it is. I also teach about its origins, how its made, who is making it, and how little research they are admitting to, hence the real knowledge at the onset of production in the 70's, that styrofoam is a serious problem environmentally. First I scare ya, then I teach you how to use it up.Then I beg you not to accept it in restaurants or from your grocer. It's terrible to be next to your veggies and meats! The leeching process has already begun, add heat to the situation by cooking and we have no idea how many different chemicals we introduce to our systems. I believe styrofoam is the cause of many types of cancers and other conditions that are on the rise. But I gotta be careful or I'll getsued talkin like that!
When I see discarded clothing on the side of the road, I bring it home, wash and dry it and either rework those things for sale as Retro Art Apparel or I take them to the Homeless shelter down town. The same with linens and towels. I also take those kinds of things to the animal shelters. They need news paper too, just for the record. I find dog crates, igloos, dog houses, food bowls and toys all the time too. They just go in a hot wash and getpassed on to a shelter.
My greatest joy is finding furniture that just needs a little love and whimsy to become a wholenew piece and become a treasure for someone's family. Or finding artmaterials. This is a serious bonus. I can't tell you how many canvasses I've painted over or just finished the painting that was started then added my little personal touches that make it mine and sold it.
There is a constant discussion between the Artist who wants to make something outrageous and pretty much useless and the Missionary Gramma who wants to save the planet. It can be a difficult battle but sOmeone always wins. Even someone beyond the Artist and the Gramma.
In what ways do you feel recycled art is helping the environment?
Obviously, it is cleaning the air we breathe, the water we drink, the soil in which we grow our food, through which we feed our future. It is leading to Peace among our nations...it is just logical to me that we mustn't abuse the space in which we exist because we then simply abuse ourselves. It is frightening to me that there are those that don't get that. I mean cats don't go potty in their beds, do they? Dogs go away from their den to Take Care of B'ness. How can humans live in their own refuse, yetbelieve they are the highest member of the food chain? It blows my mind.
Do you feel that people are encouraged to recycle when they see your art and understand your process?
ABsoLUtely! The very best gift I've EVEr been given from this life is the light that goes on in peoples eyes when they see my art or take one of myclasses. I can sEE them going through their daily routine and considering what they can do differently now that they have this inspiration, and new set of tools. It is the finest thing in the world to bear witness to folks being inspired and hearing them talk about how they are going to change their patterns and investigate new ways of existing. It's even better to help someone discover the Artist that iswaiting within to find the Muse. ThAt's powerful. I am deeply gratefulfor these gifts.
What do you believe is the number one environmental problem right now and how do you think that we humans can solve it?
Humans. Birth Control. There are too many of us. This is a small space in which we are existing. We have become greedy, lazy and addicted to instant gratification. We march off to Wal Mart and purchase brand new badly made merchandise that with a little investigation could have been found in better quality, gently used, and of reasonable cost.
Something that will be a family treasure, a sturdier member of the household,than the resin garbage we buy. Do you knOw what goes into the manufacture of all things resin? Well, look it up and change yourconsumer ways! It's right up there with styrofoam.
There doesn't seem to be any real consideration put to finding the things we really need in a creative and resourceful way. It's an individual'sbattle. You have to be vigilant of yourself. Take the time to determine what you really need, why you want it. Then take the time to find it without spending Any money on it. It CAn be done. It just takes a little work and time. You gotta really want to make a change. Ya gotta create community in which to exchange things. Barter is a tool that could save us if we could just get use to the idea that brand new doesn't mean better.
Can you tell us a little bit about your most recent project?
Currently, I'm working on The Green Room @ 1727. 1727 in a beautiful gem of agallery in the Design District on Levee Street backing up to the Trinity River. I held a Resurrection Art booth this time last year atthe Walk and Wag Festival. Jamie Labar, owner of LuminArte Designs was there for the event. She visited my booth, liked my creations andinvited me to do an EarthDay show at her gallery, 1727 on The Levee.
All my life I've dreamt of showing in the Dallas Design District. That day that dream came true. Once IN the gallery, I was given the opportunity to brain storm with Jamie and her partner Carolyn Kurtz.
It is a gorgeous facility, complete with a big performance stage, and a green room for performers to rest and prepare in. I offered that it would be a great source of income if everything in the green room was for sale. The furnishings, the deco, everything. Then it hit us all at once.
The Green Room needs to be an extension of the gallery, and our ideas became one.
I will curate artisans from the DFW area and beyond that use all recycled pieces and parts in their art. Some folks know this kind of art as Mixed Media. But it's more than that. It's truly recycled everyday objects. Mundane things that when you figure out what it is you are surprised and suddenly connected tO the art because you use that thing every day too.
There is a spiritual connection to Sustainable Art. It defines us. It's personal. It's gratifying on so many levels to be a part of Sustainable ARt.
When one purchases a piece of Sustainable Art, they are making a promise to themselves and the World that they will be more aware and effective in their lives not to abuse the wonder of this planet we are miraculously living on. It's a commitment to their community, and themselves. A joyful, easy commitment to bettering society through one's inevitable consumption.
Do you believe that humans will solve the world’s environmental issues?
Short answer: yes I do.
I have Grand Children now. And so it's become serious business for me. They are going to have children and so on. I don't want my GKidz to have to explain that their forefamilies didn't care enough to dO anything to help change the destructive course of humanity. I hope that through inspiring this new generation that change will come faster and more dramatically. I think as a whole generation, they will be mUch less tolerant of intolerance, discord, and abuse. So yes, I think We will solve Our problems. We've just got to comprehend the urgency of the incredible pace the damage we have already done is moving in.

GOOD News--Lots of Good News
==============================
-> More Food Gardening
Findingsfrom the National Gardening Association’s (NGA) new survey, "The Impactof Home and Community Gardening in America," show food gardening in theU.S. is increasing rapidly. There was a 10 percent growth in vegetablegardening from 2007 to 2008 and an anticipated 19 percent growth in2009.
-> Cash for Clunkers
Consumersturned in thousands of gas-guzzlers for more fuel-efficienttransportation in the "Cash for Clunkers" federal program.. Accordingto the U. S. Department of Transportation, Texans spent over$176,000,000 on more energy-efficient automobiles. Nationwide, therewas a 60 percent improvement in fuel economy between the trade-ins andthe new cars purchased.
-> Smaller Homes
Newhome sizes are shrinking, too. Small homes generally require fewerresources to build than large homes, require less energy to operatewhen completed, and even have lower emissions during construction.According to the U.S. Census Bureau the average size of homes startedin the third quarter of 2008 was about 200 square feet smaller than inthe second. quarter. Builders are listening. A survey by the NationalAssociation of Home Builders found that 88 percent of builders are"building or planning to build a larger share of smaller homes." KermitBaker, chief economist of the American Institute of Architects (AIA),reports that even high-end buyers are showing more interest in buyingand/or building smaller, better-crafted homes.
-> "Fixing Up" Existing Homes
Notonly are we building smaller new homes, we are increasingly "fixing up"existing homes. I read there are over 100,000, 000 existing homes inAmerica. Most need energy-efficient updates but people are doing that,also, as they take advantage of tax credits offered by Uncle Sam.
-> Renewable Energy
Renewableenergy is also adding green jobs to our economy. Large amounts of newsilicon production are increasing silicon feedstocks causing solarPhotovoltaic prices to fall. The government tax credit of 30% and otherrebates have pushed renewable energy installations up and this trend isexpected to continue.
-> Solar Megawatts
Althoughthe utility companies of North Texas are promoting the dark side ofnuclear and coal electricity production for this area, that is not trueeverywhere, even in fossil-fuel oriented Texas. Austin is building a 30megawatt solar facility and San Antonio is building a 14 megawatt solarfacility. Texas leads in wind production. Renewable energy is a brightfuture!
-> Less Red Meat
Production ofred meat and dairy is energy intensive and extremely polluting. By itsvery nature animal agriculture uses more energy, more fresh water, moreland, and pollutes more air than the production of staple foods such aspotatoes, rice, fruits and vegetables. Americans are finally eatingless meat and occasionally even passing up the cheese. CultivateResearch, a market research company, reports that 26 percent ofAmericans are now eating less meat than in the past. Subtract the 9percent who told the company they eat more meat than ever, and youstill have a planet-healthy 17 percent who are cutting back on meatconsumption.
-> Less Cattle Production = More Wildlife Habitat
Lesscattle production in America means that more land can return to growingtrees and native vegetation. This not only slows global warming, italso builds wildlife habitat.
-> Fossil Fuel Consumption Down
TheEnergy Information Administration (EIA), the statistics arm of theDepartment of Energy, said in its August report, "The economicdownturn, combined with natural gas displacing some coal as a source ofelectricity generation, is projected to lead to a 5 percent decline infossil-fuel based (carbon dioxide) emissions in 2009."
-> Sensible Consumption
Theconsumption that continues makes more sustainable sense. For example,in the first four months of 2009, more bicycles were sold in the U.S.than cars and trucks put together--over 2.55 million bicycles werepurchased, compared to fewer than 2.4 million cars and trucks.
->Europe Offers Greenhouse Gas Slash
Europeoffered to slash its greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95% by 2050 andby 30% by 2020 if a climate change pact is sealed in Copenhagen inDecember. "This should be seen as a clear message to the world," saidAndreas Carlgren, the Swedish environment minister who chaired theLuxembourg meeting. "We expect to reach an agreement in Copenhagen," headded, after environment ministers from 27 countries finalized a commonEU negotiating position. But what about cows? Will Europeans count thegreenhouse gases they cause in places like South America from importingbeef or only count the greenhouse gas production in Europe?
============
BAD News
============
-> Cows
Cowsdigest their food through enteric fermentation while "chewing theircud." This emits methane, a greenhouse gas that traps heat 23-25 times"better" than carbon dioxide. The average dairy cow belches out about100 to 200 liters of methane each day. Cow manure also produces nitrousoxide, which, considered over a 100 year period, has 298 times moreimpact per unit weight than carbon dioxide. According to an EPA aboutmethane and livestock in the U.S. alone, cattle emit about 5.5 millionmetric tons of methane per year into the atmosphere.
TheUnited Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates thatlivestock production generates nearly a fifth of the world's greenhousegases—more than human transportation. A study last year by the NationalInstitute of Livestock and Grassland Science in Japan estimated that2.2 pounds of beef is responsible for the equivalent amount of carbondioxide emitted by the average European car every 155 miles. Dr AndyThorpe, an economist at the University of Portsmouth, found a herd of200 cows can produce annual emissions of methane roughly equivalent inenergy terms to driving a family car more than 100,000 miles.Cows,which have doubled in population in the last 40 years to an estimated1.3-to-1.5 billion worldwide, produce one pound of methane for everytwo pounds of meat that they yield.
But more surprisingis fact that grazing, grass-fed cattle emit four to five more methanethan corn-fed cattle from factory farms. But factory farms causetremendous environmental and health problems, as well as producing sickcows and monstrous cruelties.
The fact is that cows, whether grass-fed or corn-fed, are bad news for this planet.
Thatbad news is growing. As Americans eat less meat, others countries,trying to adopt the American lifestyle, eat more meat and dairy.
Cowalso cause, among many other problems, clearing of rainforests forcattle grazing or planting cattle feed (Brazilian Amazon especially),and then packaging, storing, and transporting the meat, much of it toAmerica but quite a lot to Europe.
Cows are generallygentle animals. The problem is not cows, of course; the problem ispeople. If people were not buying beef and dairy, farmers would soonquit raising cattle for profit.

MUSICAL SPOTLIGHT
An Interview with Jamie Reeves
Jamie Reeves is an up and coming vocalist, guitar player and songwriter that you don't want to miss! Her voice is inspirational and her vibrations hypnotic and awakening...
Extremely curious, we asked her some questions and she very graciously responded. Now we would love to share with you her answers and viewpoints on music, spirituality, the environment, and the world at large!
Tell us a little bit about yourself, your beliefs and your music.
Greetings
As long as I can remember I have always felt connected with music and vibration. I can remember the first time I sang a pure note in music class and I knew at that moment that I would never stop singing. My family has always been musically oriented. My mother a singer and writer, my father a blues musician, and of course my two brothers Josh and Jake who have inspired me along the way and who have helped me so much with the guitar. At the age of 16, with the help of my brother Josh Reeves, I began to get very interested in Buddhism, ancient wisdom, ancient civilizations, royal bloodlines, and government and false flag conspiracies. This information is very much a part of my music and a part of who I am. To read my full bio and listen to tracks visit: www.myspace.com/jamiereevesmusic
Tune into my brothers Radio show!
My badass record label!
http://www.myspace.com/fmlrecordings
What inspires you musically?
Love, understanding, empathy, struggle, nature, the soul of the world, every form of creativity, learning, breath, silence, heartbreak, history, legends, YOGA, mind, body, balance, chakras, children, plants, animals, dreams, DMT, the third eye, galaxies, the secrets of color, the science of sound, books, meditation, crystals.
What kind of message do you hope to convey with your music?
I want to inspire everyone to live in the now. I want people to see the eye in the pyramid and start realizing that they need to take the wheel of their life and stop letting things control them. I want the human race to realize that they can not own the earth and that our earth is our mother and that it has been here longer than we have. It will be here when we are gone. We are all individual beings with lights inside of us; we should all shine and start expressing the creative force inside of us all.
In what ways does nature inspire you?
A lot of my songs are written either in nature, or admiring nature. Even something as simple as a flower blooming or the wind blowing can stir a beautiful melancholy into my soul. In 2008, a very special person in my life introduced me to a book called Ishmael, By Daniel Quinn. This book reassured me how important our planet is to our being, and how important our being is to this planet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishmael_(novel)
The three part series which includes Ishmael, The Story of B, and My Ishmael, are stories that reminded me of why I am creative, and why we must stand up for our planet and the human race. My song Cultures Chains was born after this realization.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7w0fXxM-l0
Does current state of the environment affect your musical creativity?
This is a great question, Everyday Revolution KICKSASS!!!!
Our current operating system has a very serious virus! We run on a cultural operating system that needs to be wiped clean so that it can be in touch with the animal soul, and the soul of the world. That is true nakedness. When I sit down to write a song I try to meditate and get as far away from that current operating system, and get in touch with the Divine. Often I think about our state and how we have come to this. Consumer capitalism wastes our environment, human recourses, it?s inefficient, it runs on stereotypes, and a low sampling rate which makes everyone seem alike. The Glory is in our differences!
What environmental issues do you feel are most important to address?
Two hundred species a day are dying, our food is genetically modified and its hurting us and our soil, chemtrails are being sprayed into our atmosphere and its affecting our climate, weather, and our health. Cancerous waves are being transmitted into all ecosystems of earth, oil is being spilled into oceans and killing animal life.
What do you think could help the world to take responsibility for their behavior towards nature?
Doing exactly what Everyday Revolution is doing! I believe if you take that creative force inside of you and use it to spread knowledge and truth we can all make this world a better place. Start a local book group and talk about ways you can eliminate plastics and harmful chemicals from everyday life. Start a radio show dedicated to helping our current problems. Educate people on our current department of agriculture under Obamas cabinet who was once the president of Monsanto and is taking our right to grow our own gardens away from us! Stand up for your planet, stand up for yourself, be bold and be creative! Most importantly, TURN OFF THE TELEVISON!!!
How do you feel the current economy affects the environment?
I don?t even know where to start on this question because the problem is SO LARGE!
Consumerism is SWALLOWING US! The worldview of consumption as a religion is killing us. See the movie, The Story of Stuff
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLBE5QAYXp8
What are your dreams?
I want to make everyday of my life a Revolution. I wish to strive to gain more knowledge and wisdom from our earth and spread it out to the masses so that we can make this world a better place to live for us and our children. My dream is to keep striving to write songs that spread enlightenment and light to everyone that hears them. This world is currently a very ugly place. But buried deep inside of our minds eye are beautiful plants of never ending wonder and joy. My dream is to help water that plant so that the mind can grow and become inspired and creative. You are a creative force. Now get out there and start a Revolution.
Turn in your national pin, Tune out your television, Drop out of your indoctrination; this is the time of the Revelation. Tune in your intuition, Turn on your Divine Intervention. Drop out of a dying system and follow your soul to the Revolution.

The Woodbine Archosaurs in Arlington, Texas
“The Arlington Archosaur Site is a prolific fossil site that was discovered in northern Arlington Texas by UT-Arlington students Phil Kirchhoff and Bill Walker along with local fossil collectors Art and Olivia Sahlstein in the summer of 2003. The site was later reported to Dr. Christopher R. Scotese at the UTA Earth Sciences Dept. and his geology graduate student Derek J. Main in the fall of 2003. Phil Kirchhoff and Bill Walker brought some of the fossils from the site to show to Derek J. Main for identification. Main identified the fossils as dinosaur teeth and vertebrae along with various crocodile scutes and teeth. Hence the origin of the name for the site, as dinosaurs and crocodiles both belong to the Archosaurs; the "Ruling Reptiles". Derek J. Main and the sites discoverers agreed to work the Arlington Archosaur Site as a collaborative effort.”
~from http://arlingtonarchosaursite.com
They are still accepting volunteers to help with the dig. They want to share the experience of participating in the recovery of an ancient coastal ecosystem
Derek Main relates the Archosaur Site to environmental awareness:
“…as far as environment goes, what is interesting about the AAS is that its a well-preserved ancient ecosystem. We all hear about the effects of global warming, but never really think about broad scale change occurring. During the Cretaceous, when it was much warmer, there were no polar ice caps and sea level was much higher. Arlington was on the Texas coast line, and the AAS preserves a coastal everglades style ecology.”
If you love ancient life, you are in for a real treat!
Please visit the Arlington Archosaur site. Some wonderful information and resources are listed among its contents.

Recycling Mystery: Styrofoam
It's the eternal question: Can I recycle Styrofoam®?
It's everywhere: It holds your food, secures items in packages, provides insulation in homes and it's even in your bike helmet. Also known as expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam, it's a version of plastic #6 (polystyrene), which you've seen used in plastic cups and CD and DVD cases.
Fun fact: In 2006, the Alliance of Foam Packaging Recyclers reported that 56 million pounds of EPS were recycled that year alone. That's an astonishing amount considering that EPS is 98 percent air.
Here's the thing: Even if your community recycles plastic #6, it may not accept EPS. It's a similar case to the plastic bag conundrum, where different versions of plastics require separate recycling streams.
Because it's so lightweight, EPS takes up 0.01 percent of the total municipal solid waste stream by weight, but as you may have guessed, its volume is a greater problem than its weight. It takes up space in landfills and doesn't biodegrade. If you haven't recycled EPS before, here's how:
Methods of Recycling
Like we mentioned earlier, the most convenient method for consumers utilizes curbside recycling programs; however, due to transportation coordination and contamination rates, most communities do not have EPS recycling programs. But don't despair, you have a number of options at your fingertips:
Drop-off sites - Check Earth911.com to find where you can find polystyrene recycling in your area. Make sure to call local sites beforehand to make sure EPS is accepted and in what form. If they do take EPS, most accept packing materials but not food or medical containers. Bring empty containers free of tape, labels, plastic film, etc. As you know, contaminants can ruin the recycling process.
Mail-back - If a drop-off site doesn't exist in your area, you can also use a mail-back program such as the Alliance of Foam Packaging Recyclers (www.epspackaging.org). Remember to remove all debris from the EPS before breaking it into smaller pieces that fit into a box for shipping.
Reuse for loose fill - What about packing peanuts? Their simplest reuse is in another package you need to ship. You can also donate them to UPS or other shipping stores, who will gladly reuse the material. Not sure where to go? Call the automated, 24-hour Peanut Hot line at 800-828-2214 to find a site near your residence that will reuse them.
Large volume - Working with a recycling company for pick-up service is best if your business receives mass amounts of EPS. Company requirements for storage and equipment vary, but it's typical for storage containers to remain outdoors in a bin where EPS is kept clean, dry and unexposed to the elements. It is wise to check with the company to see how they accept EPS, whether it be stacked, bagged, bailed, condensed, etc.
On-site (for industry) - In the event that your business needs to routinely condense large pieces of EPS, look for devices from companies like RecycleTech or Styromelt™. For example, Styromelt™ is a device that uses thermal compaction to not only reduce the volume of EPS, but also to sterilize the briquette.
Advancing Technologies
Biodegradable packing materials are definitely in style. Puffy Stuff produces a plant-based product that can be used as fertilizer on your lawn. It breaks down into inert proteins after coming in contact with water and is consumed by soil bacteria. Puffy Stuff claims its product is so natural, you can eat it (although we haven't tried it - yet!).
Also, scientists at Sony discovered that EPS completely dissolves when sprayed with limonene, a natural oil extracted from the skin of oranges or other citrus fruits. The EPS dissolves at room temperature and can be processed for reuse.
Because of the varied uses for EPS, recycling requirements are a little more complex than, say, paper and other plastics, but it is worth taking the time in order to keep this prevalent material in use and out of landfills.

EPS Recycling Equipment*
The most common method of recycling expanded polystyrene packaging is through a regrind process. Due to supply and ease of processing, packaging manufacturers normally incorporate recycled content into their products by blending in used expanded particles from products they take in and grind down to the bead level.
To increase recycling of EPS in the United States, there are numerous programs utilized to place equipment wherever volume permits and the foam can be sold to manufacturers using the densified EPS Foam in products like composite or plastic lumber used for longer lasting, weather resistant outdoor decks or fencing, drain field aggregate substitute or drainage tile blankets used for increased drainage under roads and highways, and it is even used for hard jewel cases for CDs and DVDs.

CLEANING UP YOUR SCHOOLS
“Environmental advocate Patti Wood, executive director of Grassroots Environmental Education, spends much of her time working to get schools to stop using pesticides and embrace green cleaning products. Why? Wood points to the fact that we’re seeing rising rates of children’s asthma, learning disabilities, development disorders, and allergies. ‘We need to be concerned about indoor air quality because kids today are spending more and more time inside,’ says Wood. ‘During the school year, kids learn and play in the same buildings and classrooms day after day, and if there are air-quality issues related to the cleaning products and other chemicals this can mean significant exposures.’ She’s met with considerable success so far, having helped many private and public schools make the transition to “ChildSafe” products, which meet a very strict standard that Wood developed for use around children.
Harsh cleaning products are used on a daily basis in most schools. Many common products, for example, contain 2-butoxyethanol, a liver and kidney toxicant absorbed through the skin. Wood offers the following advice to concerned parents looking to make changes in their child’s school (for more information and supporting materials visit www.grassrootsinfo.org and look for ChildSafe School Program):
1. Get a list of cleaning and pest control products that your child’s school uses from the principal or building and grounds person and ask for a Material Data Safety Sheet (MSDS) for each product used, which will tell you whether there is a health warning or danger associated with the active ingredients in a product. Although this information is useful, an MSDS will reveal only acute and immediate effects, not long-term effects, which are the ones that are particularly troubling, according to Wood.
2. Do your own research. Go to Environmental Health Perspectives, www.ehponline.org and search the active ingredient names to find related peer-reviewed scientific studies. For pesticides, go to the Pesticide Action Network’s database, www.pesticideinfo.org
3. Get a list of alternative cleaning products by going to www.grassrootsinfo.org . There are many effective, cost-contemplative and safe products on the market, according to Wood, so there’s no reason not to use them. It’s up to knowledgeable and concerned parents, though, to encourage their schools to make the transition to safer products.
4. Go back to school armed with your research about the health impacts of the products that the school is using along with the list of alternative products that are safe and work well and ask your school to try them.
Providing the names of local distributors and enlisting the help of the parent-school organization and other local environmental agencies can be useful.

$87,512,800 awarded to Texas in July as Recovery Act funding which will be used to increase energy efficiency and expand the use of renewable energy in the public sector, while also providing information resources that will empower Texans from across the state to achieve energy, emissions, and cost savings for years to come. Capitalizing on the successful LoanSTAR program, Texas will introduce a revolving loan program that will enable public facilities to implement building efficiency measures. Recovery Act funds will also be used for competitive grants to state agencies, communities, schools, and hospitals to install and demonstrate solar, wind, biomass, and geothermal energy technologies. After demonstrating successful implementation of its plan, the state will receive an additional $109 million, for a total of nearly $219 million.

ANIMALS, ORGANICS AND PLANET LOSE
We all lose in Big Agriculture's attempt to sterilize farmland in California--a plan that will go national. Birds, frogs, mice and deer - and anything that shelters them - are caught in a raging battle in the Salinas Valley against E. coli O157:H7, a lethal, food-borne bacteria. Rodents are poisoned; the owls that eat them die; now there are no natural controls for rodents. Ponds are bulldozed, no frog parts in lettuce bags; now groundwater is pumped for irrigation. And the list goes on. And it is coming our way in a national bill--supposedly to make the consumer safe from E. coli but, in my opinion, to make Big Ag safe from lawsuits. The Green Bathroom
“Mold, mildew, and bacteria thrive in damp, warm environments, so bathrooms are a perfect breeding ground. However, you don’t have to rely on “big guns” to clean your bathroom. As for the toilet bowl, acid-based toilet cleaners are among the most toxic in your household because they are corrosives and can cause severe internal and external burns. You can find safer alternatives to clean your bathroom.
Be especially careful when using multiple products because sometimes dangerous gases can form. This can happen in any room, but more of these products tend to be used together in the bathroom. Mixing chlorine bleach with ammonia, for example, will produce lung-irritating chloramine gas. Mixing chlorine bleach with an acid-based product like a toilet bowl cleaner may release chlorine gas. Chlorine bleach, which on its own can irritate your eyes and lungs, is often found in mildew-stain removers and some bath and toilet cleaners. Ammonia, which is also a strong lung irritant, is marketed on its own and in some glass, bathroom-surface, and floor cleaners.
GREEN
*Try cleaning your toilet bowl without a specific toilet bowl cleaner by using a non-toxic scouring product such as Bon Ami, which is inexpensive and widely available.
* Try to prevent mold from forming so you won’t need to rely on cleaning products regularly. Fix leaks and wipe up wet surfaces and shower curtains right away. Also deal with any mold immediately rather than waiting for it to build up.
* If you don’t have good ventilation in your bathroom, open the window after a steamy shower or bath to prevent mold from growing.
GREENER
* Buy less toxic bathroom and glass cleaners, such as those offered by Seventh Generation, Ecover or other brands. If a product doesn’t list its ingredients you won’t know if what you are buying is any safer than conventional products. However, as more companies list ingredients voluntarily it will be easier to get a sense of what you are buying. In addition to ammonia, some glass cleaners contain 2-butoxyethanol, which has been shown to harm the central nervous system, kidneys, and liver in rats.
* If you must buy a toilet bowl cleaner buy one that’s not corrosive. Look for products without the signal word ‘Danger’.
GREENEST
* Consider adding an exhaust fan in the bathroom if mold and mildew are a problem and you don’t have a window to open. If you have a fan already, make sure its not clogged with dust.”

GOOD News
Dogs Save Humans--Again! Some dogs can smell odors given off by humans with bladder cancer and diabetes, researchers say. In some cases, the canines warn of oncoming attacks. Rob Harris, Dog trainer: "Dogs have a highly-developed sense of smell. Their nose is in use every day. We just use that part of their nose to help us identify the odor of cancer."
Animal Labs Required to Post Data. Animal research facilities will be required to disclose more information online about their experiments. A settlement iwth US Humane Society will require the Agriculture Department to post annual reports from those facilities, including what they call "pain and distress information," on its Web site. The settlement will now be submitted to the federal district court for the District of Columbia for final approval.
Stricter Auto Emissions Granted. The Obama administration granted California permission Tuesday to begin enforcing its stricter auto emissions standards. Under an agreement reached among the governments, industry and environmentalists, the federal government will adopt the California standards and begin enforcing them nationwide in 2012.
ASHRAE Introduces Building Energy Label. The good news is that a prototype label for the ASHRAE Headquarters in Atlanta was recently unveiled. ASHRAE is working with major real estate developers to implement the label prototype this fall with a widespread launch of the full program in 2010. The Building Energy Quotient program, which will be known as Building EQ, will include both asset and operational ratings for all building types. The bad news is that is does not include residential. BAD News
Silk Soymilk Is No Longer Always Organic. Check Silk cartons before buying as most of their soymilk is no longer organic. This opens the way for genetically modified soybeans to be used.
Silk Uses Neurotoxin in Production. According to The Cornucopia Institute, Silk's Light soymilk, as well as its "Heart Health" soymilk, is made with hexane-extracted soy flour instead of whole soybeans. Hexane is a highly explosive volatile solvent that is a byproduct of gasoline refining and a neurotoxin, which is listed as the main ingredient in these Silk products.
FIRST SUNDAY BUFFET: July 5
After years of a wonderful monthly vegan buffet at Thai Jasmine in Bedford, we moved to a new location in May where the food is equally as good and as abundant plus we have much more space: Papaya Garden, 1201 W. Airport Frwy #100, 817 684-9378, Euless 76040. Sunday, July 5, 11:30 am - 2 pm and every first Sunday thereafter.
Actually, the current owner, Kim, started the idea of the vegan buffet many years ago when she owned a restaurant on Magnolia in Fort Worth. She not only knows how to put the finishing touches on vegan, she also keeps the food fresh throughout the 2.5 -hour
buffet. The June food was fantastic.
Come with your friends and family and sit together or please sit with us. Ask for Terry at the door and they will direct you to an interesting group of folks.
Papaya Garden is on the southwest corner of Airport Freeway (Hwy 183) and Industrial (FM 157--which is Collins in North Arlington). It faces Industrial rather than Airport Fwy. First Sunday Vegan Buffet hours are from 11:30 until 2 pm. $9.95. This location will continue into the future every first Sunday.
Questions? Call Terry at 817 545-0140 or 972 251-1532.
ORGANIC FARMERS at Saturday Markets
There is a certified organic farmer at the McKinney Market. The market is at Chestnut Square from 8 am until 12 noon. The rest of the market? This is from the rules and regs of the McKinney market, "Vendors shall be subject to inspection of their farm or place of production at any time to assure that at least 60% of their produce is homegrown or their products are homemade." I assume this means the farmer can buy and resell 40% of products at this market..
There is also a certified-organic farmer at the Coppell Farmers Market each Saturday.: Starts at 8 am at the corners of Bethel and South Coppell Roads in Coppell. Coppell does try to limit the produce sold there to farmers who grow their own or bring a neighbors produce. Although I saw produce that were far out of season for North Texas, the head of the organization said the volunteers would try to inspect farms in the future to stop that.
If you know of other certified organic farmers that grace our local farmer's markets, please let me know who, where, when, and what time so I can spread the word.
PHOTOS
Taken by Hubble Space Telescope and supplied by Peggy LaPoint.
Remarking in an article from the Daily Mail, reporter Michael Hanlon writes the photos "illustrate that our universe is not only deeply strange, but also almost impossibly beautiful."
To me... It also shows how insignificant we are and how easy it would be for humans and most animals to cease to exist if we don't take care of the earthship that takes care of us and the other inhabitants of this planet.

Organic and Recycled Clothing
“There is a growing awareness that what we wear and how we furnish our homes can impact our health and the planet’s, and affect the workers who toil long hours to make these products for us. Conventionally grown cotton, for example, is a huge eco-offender-it consumes enormous amounts of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers that deplete soil and pollute water. Fabric and upholstery dyes are made from heavy metals and other toxic chemicals; the dyeing process uses vast amounts of water and is highly polluting. Furniture that’s made from wood not culled from sustainably manages forests contributes to deforestation.
If you’re willing to seek it out, you can find hip clothing made from organic cotton and other sustainable materials such as bamboo and interesting furniture made from sustainably harvested or salvaged wood.
As with most other green products, there are no perfect solutions. Everything takes energy to produce and transport no matter how pure the raw ingredients are. A good example is bamboo. It is a sturdy, renewable plant that doesn’t require the use of pesticides. However, critics point out that it usually has to be shipped all the way from China, and processing it into fabric is polluting. The processing of Tencel is cleaner than that for producing rayon, but both fabrics are made from wood pulp. It’s a matter of trade-offs and what issues are important to you.
Sustainable clothing usually does cost more money, but it’s getting easier to find affordable options, especially as mainstream retailers and manufacturers take part. Wal-Mart is a major seller of organic cotton garments in America. Levi’s has a line of organic denim with some modestly priced options. American Apparel sells organic cotton T-shirts that are affordable and widely available. Simple Shoes uses recycled rubber in its products and recently materials like jute, hemp, cork, and bamboo. Timberland strives to consider its impact on the environment from energy use to the sustainable materials it incorporates into its products, packaging, and stores. Nike is blending organic cotton into some of its products.
GREEN:
* Wash your clothes less often when you can. The actual maintenance of your clothes (washing, drying, and ironing) has more of an impact on the environment than the creation and distribution of a garment. According to “Well Dressed?,” a report from researchers at Cambridge University, 60 percent of the carbon emissions generated by a cotton T-shirt come from the energy required to wash and dry it.
* Instead of buying something new for an important event such as a job interview or formal occasion, raid your friends closets.
GREENER:
* Buy secondhand clothing
* Buy fewer but more durable pieces of clothing
* Repair clothes: sew buttons back on or hire a professional to refresh old items.
* If you’re drawn to a piece of clothing that makes sustainability claims, then try to buy it. It’s a great way to support those companies and spread the word, says Hoffman, who suggests finding a few pieces that fir into your wardrobe even if you have to spend a little extra money and then wearing them to death. Every little bit helps. Each T-shirt made from 100 percent organic cotton saves one-third of a pound of synthetic agricultural products from being used, according to the Sustainable Cotton Project.
GREENEST
*Actively seek out sustainably produced clothing and choose it whenever its an option.
* When clothes shopping, ask store owners or managers to stock up on organic and sustainable options.
* Shop at flea markets, street fairs, and farmers’ market for clothes made by local artisans.
* Don’t throw out clothes that are still wearable. Instead, find places to donate your old castaways or organize a clothing swap. Invite a bunch of friends to bring over all their unwanted clothing and pick up someone else’s castaways.”

“Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but they can also be the source of bloody conflicts in war-torn African villages. Mining for gold disrupts ecosystems, produces large amounts of waste, and can seriously pollute water with heavy metals such as mercury, arsenic and lead. There is no need to shun jewelry entirely, though.”

POETRY BY JAY BOOKWORM AND THE GREAT PACIFIC GARBAGE HEAP VIDEOS
Collage of Family Sighs: Grandparents: Part One
Joyfully colored lyrics leap off the canvas, dancing to the strains of the steel guitar.
A sweet, soft voice sings in harmony,
In sharp contrast to, years later, when that same voice would be silent,
Expelling only a mournful sigh, when musician was separated from singer,
When his heart beat stopped, his beat continued on in heaven.
A photo of a figure skater, dancing across the gleaming ice, stands affixed.
The skater appears and dissolves.
She is the image and he frames her with his lens.
These two are now separated through an absence of mind for one, body for the other.
The dance binds them, as surely as any love song.
It is music without words.
My mother’s father was a musician and a song writer.
Her mother was a singer and a sewer, creating beautiful crafts to be cherished.
We represent the unique threads of a design to be admired and shared.
Our talents were nurtured by those before us.
My father’s mother was an ice skater and his father a photographer.
Four lives mixed in a lineage of artistry and memory.
Among us, we are two painters, two designers, a novelist, a poet,
A wood carver, a musician, and those whose artistic contribution is still forming.
Begin with the breath. I remember the way my granny breathed out in sorrow and acceptance at the death of her beloved years ago. Years later, angels breathed into her, releasing her from the oxygen machine and the pain of a frail and failing body. The constant painful sighing is now transformed into the celebratory song of reunion.
Love ones gathered again, in the sweeping sands of time,
As memories evaporate and resurface.
Those that remain are vessels for new collages.
My dad created collages of photos and home videos to honor his parents’ memories.
His father, a philosopher, astronomer and world traveler, witnessed history during World War II, He loved classical music and fantastic stories, which he shared with dad and me.
He was young at heart for many years, until his heart stopped a few years ago.
My father’s mother lives in her mind without a mind,
Holding the empty space of her former thoughts and memories, now erased.
Emptiness has possibility and serenity, new inventions pending,
Waiting to spin into the alternate universe, where illness has no place.
She was a skater, dancing across the ice, poetry in motion, a silent song.
Now, she is silent, still, sleeping, awaiting transition and reunion.
In the family collage, breath passes in creative endeavor,
Through the whistling winds of memory and legacy
Past and present mingle into the future.
The collage continues here on earth,
As above, so below.

ANIMAL SPOTLIGHT: THE NARWHAL
Inuit Legend

“A wicked woman lived with her daughter and her son, who was born blind. As the son got older, his sight improved, even though the mother tried to convince him of his helpless state. One day a polar bear came near the house and the mother told the son to aim a bow and arrow at the bear through the window covered with seal skin and strike him down. The boy pulled back the arrow and the mother took aim from him. The arrow struck the heart of the bear and although the boy could hear the groans of the dying bear, the mother laughed scornfully at him, saying that he had missed the bear. That night the mother and the daughter had fresh polar bear meat while the mother cooked dog meat for the son. Later the boy's sister told her brother that his shot was successful and secretly gave him meat.
Time passed and an old man came to the house for a visit. Before he left, he told the young girl how she could help her brother regain his sight. In the spring, he told them to watch for a red throated loon who would swim trustingly toward them. Once the loon was close enough, the blind brother should wrap his arms around the loon's neck and the loon would take him to the bottom of the lake. Once they came up, his sight would return. The loon told the young man not to tell about his regained sight until later in the summer when he would send a pod of belugas to their campsite.
When summer came and the ice began to break, the belugas began to move. On one occasion, a pod was closer to land than usual. The young man grabbed his harpoon and told his sister to accompany him to help him aim. They went to the shoreline and the mother, seeing the son with a harpoon, became concerned and followed them. Once she was close to them, the son gave the end of the line from the harpoon to his mother, asking her to tie it around her waist to hold the harpooned animal. The concerned mother told her daughter to make sure he was after a small animal as she was tied to the harpoon. The son instead aimed for the largest whale and harpooned him. The mother was cast into the sea. As she submerged she spiraled around the line, with her long hair twisting into a long lance. This is how the narwhal came to be.”
~From http://www.narwhal.org/
Narwhals are a most unusual creature! Animals of myth and mystery, they are fascinating! Investigate these Narwhal facts:
“The narwhal (Monodon monoceros) is a medium-sized toothed whale that lives year-round in the Arctic. One of two species of whale in the Monodontidae family, along with the Beluga whale, the narwhal males are distinguished by a characteristic long, straight, helical tusk extending from their upper left jaw. Found primarily in Canadian Arctic and Greenlandic waters rarely south of 65°N latitude, the narwhal is a uniquely specialized Arctic predator. In the winter, it feeds on benthic prey, mostly flatfish, at depths of up to 1500 m under dense pack ice.Harvested for thousands of years by Inuit people in Northern Canada and Greenland for meat and ivory, a regulated subsistence hunt continues to this day. While populations appear stable, the narwhal has been deemed particularly vulnerable to climate change due to a narrow geographical range and specialized diet.
The narwhal was one of the many species originally described by Linnaeus in his Systema Naturae.This is based on the Old Norse word nár, meaning "corpse", in reference to the animal's greyish, mottled pigmentation, like that of a drowned sailor.The scientific name, Monodon monoceros, is derived from Greek: "one-tooth one-horn".
Male narwhals weigh up to 1,600 kilograms (3,500 lb), and the females weigh around 1,000 kilograms (2,200 lb). The pigmentation of the narwhal is a mottled black and white pattern. They are darkest when born and become whiter in color with age.
The most conspicuous characteristic of the male narwhal is its single 2–3 meter (7–10 ft) long tusk. It is an incisor tooth that projects from the left side of the upper jaw and forms a left-handed helix. The tusk can be up to 3 meters (9.8 ft) long (compared with a body length of 4–6 meters (13–16 ft)) and weigh up to 10 kilograms (22 lb). About one in 500 males has two tusks, which occurs when the right incisor, normally small, also grows out. A female narwhal may also produce a tusk, but this occurs rarely, and there is a single recorded case of a female with dual tusks.
The most broadly accepted theory for the role of the tusk is as a secondary sexual characteristic, similar to the mane of a lion or the tail feathers of a peacock. This hypothesis was notably discussed and defended at length by Charles Darwin, in The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex (1871). It may help determine social rank, maintain dominance hierarchies or help young males develop skills necessary for performance in adult sexual roles. Narwhals have rarely been observed using their tusk for fighting or other aggressive behavior or for breaking sea ice in their Arctic habitat.”

THE NARWHALS AND CLIMATE CHANGE
“The polar bear has become an icon of global warming vulnerability, but a new study found an Arctic mammal that may be even more at risk to climate change: the narwhal.
The narwhal, a whale with a long spiral tusk that inspired the myth of the unicorn, edged out the polar bear for the ranking of most potentially vulnerable in a climate change risk analysis of Arctic marine mammals.
The study was published this week in the peer-reviewed journal Ecological Applications. Polar bears are considered marine mammals because they are dependent on the water and are included as a species in the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act.
Scientists from three countries quantified the vulnerabilities that 11 year-round Arctic sea mammals have as the world warms. After the narwhal — which is also known as the "corpse whale" — and polar bear, the most at risk were the hooded seal, bowhead whale and walrus. The ringed seal and bearded seal were least at risk.
"What we wanted to do was look at the whole picture because there's been a lot of attention on polar bears," said study co-author Ian Stirling, a polar bear and seal specialist for the Canadian government. "We're talking about a whole ecosystem. We're talking about several different species that use ice extensively and are very vulnerable."
